Ingredients

Meatballs

  • 1/3 cup Plain Bread Crumbs
  • 1/4 cup Milk
  • 1 Egg
  • 1/4 cup Finely Diced Onion
  • 1/4 teaspoon Allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon Nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon Pepper
  • 1/2 pound Ground Beef
  • 1/2 pound Ground Pork

Sauce

  • 1/4 cup Butter
  • 3 Tablespoons Flour
  • 2 cups Beef Broth
  • 1/4 cup Half and Half
  • 1/2 teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Onion Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 3/4 teaspoon Salt

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  • Add breadcrumbs, milk, egg, onion, allspice, nutmeg, garlic, salt, and black pepper to a large bowl. Beat until ingredients are incorporated, and let the mixture sit for 5 minutes.
1/3 cup Plain Bread Crumbs, 1/4 cup Milk, 1 Egg, 1/4 cup Finely Diced Onion, 1/4 teaspoon Allspice, 1/4 teaspoon Nutmeg, 1 teaspoon Salt, 1/4 teaspoon Pepper
  • Add pork and ground beef to the breadcrumb mixture. Combine ingredients and form the mixture into 12 - 15 even-portioned meatballs. Place the meatballs on a greased sheet pan and bake for 15 minutes, turning the meatballs halfway through the cooking process.
1/2 pound Ground Beef, 1/2 pound Ground Pork
  • While the meatballs bake, melt the butter in a large saucepan. Add the flour and stir over medium-high heat for 1 - 2 minutes.
1/4 cup Butter, 3 Tablespoons Flour
  • Add half of the beef broth. The sauce will thicken quickly.  Add the rest of the beef broth and half and half, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt.  Continue to cook until the sauce thickens, stirring often. It should take 5 - 7 minutes.
2 cups Beef Broth, 1/4 cup Half and Half, 1/2 teaspoon Garlic Powder, 1/2 teaspoon Onion Powder, 1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper, 3/4 teaspoon Salt
  • Once the sauce has thickened, add the meatballs to the sauce. Simmer for an additional 5-10 minutes over low heat.  The meatballs should be 160 degrees.
  • Garnish with fresh parsley and serve over rice, mashed potatoes, or egg noodles.

Notes

Frozen meatballs can be used, but you’ll want to add the allspice and nutmeg to the sauce for a traditional Swedish meatball flavor profile.
Chill the Meatballs: After forming the meatballs, it's a good idea to chill them in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes. Chilling helps the meatballs hold their shape better when cooking and prevents them from falling apart.
Use a Meat Thermometer: To ensure the meatballs are cooked through, use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature. It should reach 160°F (71°C) for beef and pork meatballs.
Storage - Be sure meatballs are at room temperature before storing in the fridge or freezer.
