Equipment

  • Pie Plate

Ingredients

  • 1 small Onion
  • 1 Tablespoon Butter
  • 5 Eggs
  • 12 ounces Evaporated Milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon Thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 Deep Dish Pie Crust
  • 3/4 cup Crumbled Bacon Cooked
  • 1 cup Sharp Cheddar Cheese Shredded

Instructions

  • Heat the butter in a small skillet over medium heat. Add the onions and sauté for 5 minutes or until they begin to soften.
1 small Onion, 1 Tablespoon Butter
  • Reduce the heat to medium low and cook for 15 - 20 minutes, stirring often, or until the onions are very soft, golden brown. The timing will depend on the size of your onions and the heat of your stove.
  • While onions are cooking, preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • In medium bowl, whisk eggs, evaporated milk, thyme, salt and pepper; set aside.
5 Eggs, 12 ounces Evaporated Milk, 1/2 teaspoon Thyme, 1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper, 1/4 teaspoon Salt
  • To the bottom of the deep dish pie crust layer bacon, onions and grated cheese.
1 Deep Dish Pie Crust, 3/4 cup Crumbled Bacon, 1 cup Sharp Cheddar Cheese
  • Pour egg mixture into pie pan. Gently give the ingredients a stir with a fork.
  • Bake 40 to 50 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Let stand 5 minutes; cut into wedges.

Notes

  • To be sure you have enough room in the pie crust for the egg mixture, use a deep dish pie plate, not a tart pan. It should be a 9-inch pie plate.
  • Be sure to use a baking sheet to protect the oven in case the egg mixture creeps out of the pie crust.
  • When the internal temperature is at 160 degrees on an instant-read thermometer you'll know the quiche is done.
