Surprise your favorite guys on father’s day! Take a 2 oz canning jar, fill with BBQ spice rub, add a ribbon and you’ll have a great gift.
INGREDIENTS TO MAKE BARBECUE RUB
- Smoked Paprika – It has a smoky and spicy flavor that’s completely different from everyday paprika.
- Onion Powder
- Garlic Powder
- Salt
- Black Pepper
- Celery Salt
- Cayenne Pepper
- Dry Mustard Powder
- Brown Sugar – The sweetness compliments the spicy flavor from the cayenne pepper and creates a nice crust on the meat.
PRO TIP – For the best flavor be sure your spices are fresh. The best way to tell if your spices are fresh is to smell them. The smell should be sharp and fresh.
My favorite place to purchase spices in the Kansas City area is Penzeys in Downtown Overland Park, KS. They are based out of Wisconsin, but they have retail stores all over the country. Plus, they offer shipping.

BEST WAYS TO USE THIS HOMEMADE BBQ RUB RECIPE
Whether you plan to bake, smoke or throw some meat on the gas grill, you’ll love the perfect balance of flavor this rub brings.
- BBQ Ribs in a slow cooker are one of my favorite ways to use this spice blend. Here’s how to make them: Be sure the entire surface of the meat is covered with the spice blend. Cook on low for 8 hours. Next, place the pork on a baking sheet, brush on your favorite store bought BBQ sauce or try this homemade barbecue sauce. Broil for an additional 5 minutes. Delish!
- Pork Chops
- Instant Pot Pulled Pork – Pork butt is transformed into the most delicious pulled pork when using the pressure cooker. Use the pork for sandwiches, pizza or top on an air fryer loaded baked potato.
- Honey Bourbon Wings
- BBQ Chicken
- Pork Tenderloin
WANT TO STORE FOR LATER? HERE’S HOW:
I recommend making a big batch of this recipe. It will save you time and it’ll be super nice to have on hand for your next last minute barbecue. Store any leftover rub in a mason jar or any airtight container. It’s best if kept in a cool, dry place.
The spice will last up to 6 months, although I recommend you use it within 2 months for the freshest flavors.

Thank you!!
Hi, I am confused about one of the ingredients you listed. One paragraph has it listed as “Celery Seed” then later you list “Celery Salt”. Plus you do list Salt, I want to make this rub it sounds so good, but need to get the ingredients right!
Thanks!
I’m so sorry! You will want to use Celery Salt. I’ve updated the recipe. I would love to hear how you end up using the rub.
Have you used this with your roasted chic peas recipe?
I haven’t yet, but that is an excellent idea. Use 1 1/2 tbsp in place of the other spices.
This is a “must-have” staple in any spice drawer. The combination of these spices is the perfect blend for a variety of dishes. I love all your suggestions for its use. What a timely recipe for Super Bowl Parties. Thanks so much for sharing.
Thank you Kristy! It does work for so many different recipes.
