I love a good pasta salad, but sometimes it’s fun to bring something a little different to the cookout. One day, I started thinking about how much I love the creamy, crunchy texture of my creamy coleslaw and wondered what would happen if I combined the two.

After a little testing, this version quickly became my favorite. It’s simple, fresh, and exactly the kind of recipe I want sitting next to burgers and brats all summer long.

Simple Ingredients

Ingredients to make a creamy pasta salad with coleslaw, mayo, spices, sugar and pasta.

Recipe Notes

  • Ditalini Pasta – The small tube shape mixes perfectly with the cabbage and creates the ideal bite. Any shape can work, though.
  • Coleslaw Mix – One bag keeps prep work quick and easy.
  • Fresh Dill – Fresh dill gives the salad its signature flavor. If needed, substitute 1 teaspoon dried dill.
  • Celery Seed – A classic coleslaw ingredient that adds just the right amount of flavor.
  • Mayonnaise – Provides the creamy base for the dressing. I recommend using real mayonnaise rather than salad dressing.

Jill’s Top Tips

  • Cook the pasta just until al dente, so it holds its texture after chilling.
  • Fresh dill makes a noticeable difference in both flavor and appearance.
  • Let the salad chill for at least an hour before serving.
  • Stir the salad before serving to redistribute the dressing.
