Simple Ingredients

Ingredients to make chocolate walnut brownies.

You will find a full list of ingredients in the recipe card below:

  • All Purpose Flour
  • Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • Cornstarch – Cornstarch helps to give the brownie a chewy texture.
  • Baking Powder
  • Butter – I’ve used salted and unsalted butter.
  • Sugar – This recipe calls for granulated or white sugar, not brown sugar.
  • Chopped Walnuts – Although walnuts are my favorite in brownies, you can substitute any kind of nut, including pecans and almonds.

How to make gooey, fudgy brownies

Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line an 8 by 8-inch square pan with parchment paper and spray with cooking spray.

Step 2: In a small mixing bowl, combine flour, cocoa powder, salt, cornstarch, and baking powder.

Step 3: In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Remove from the heat and whisk in sugar, eggs, and vanilla.

Step 4: With a wooden spoon, stir in the dry ingredients. Mix in chopped walnuts and spread the brownie mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish. Be careful not to over-mix the brownies.

Step 5: Bake for 20 – 25 minutes, being careful not to overbake. Bake time will vary depending on the type of pan and your oven.

How to store leftover brownies

Fridge: Room temperature leftover brownies can be stored in an airtight container for 3 – 4 days. I wrap each brownie individually in plastic wrap before storing them in an airtight container or zip-top bag.

Freezer: Store in an airtight container after they have cooled completely.

Tips for making walnut brownies

  • Quality Ingredients: Start with high-quality ingredients, including good-quality cocoa powder, real butter, fresh eggs, and premium chocolate. Using fresh walnuts will also enhance the flavor and texture of your brownies.
  • Proper Mixing: Be careful not to overmix the batter. Overmixing can result in dense and tough brownies. Mix the ingredients until just combined to achieve a tender and fudgy texture.
  • Chop Walnuts: Don’t chop the walnuts too fine. I love a bite of brownie with a big walnut included!
  • Grease the Pan: To prevent the brownies from sticking to the pan, grease the baking pan generously with butter or cooking spray, and consider lining it with parchment paper for easy removal.
  • Even Baking: Ensure the brownie batter is spread evenly in the baking pan to promote even baking. Use a spatula to smooth the surface for uniform thickness.
  • Underbake Slightly: Brownies will continue to cook slightly after they’re removed from the oven due to residual heat. To achieve a fudgy texture, consider removing them from the oven when they’re slightly underbaked in the center.
  • Cool Completely: Allow the brownies to cool completely in the baking pan before cutting them into squares. This helps them set properly and prevents them from falling apart.
  • Dark Chocolate Walnut Brownies – Add dark chocolate cocoa and dark chocolate chips to create dark chocolate brownies.

How to serve

Keep it simple and slice the brownies into 9 equal squares and serve warm right out of the oven. Or, you can get fancy and serve them with a scoop of ice cream, hot fudge sauce, sprinkles, chocolate chips, whipped cream, or additional walnuts.
