HOW TO MAKE EASY CUT-OUT SUGAR COOKIES

Cookies

  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer or in a large bowl, cream together the butter and the sugars until creamy.
  2. Add the egg and vanilla and beat until combined.
  3. In a separate bowl stir together the baking soda, cream of tartar, salt and flour.
  4. Gradually add all of the dry ingredients to the wet until completely combined.
  5. Divide dough into two equal parts.
  6. Between two pieces of parchment paper, roll out the dough to 1/4″ in. Flip the paper a couple of times to ensure that the dough rolls out evenly.
  7. Do the same with the second piece of dough.
  8. Place the dough in the freezer on a cookie sheet for 15 minutes. Be sure it is completely flat.
  9. Once dough has finished chilling, preheat oven to 350 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.  Set aside.
  10. Generously dust a clean surface with flour. Remove the dough from the parchment paper and place on the work surface. Lightly flour the dough and begin cutting out the dough with cookie cutters.
  11. If the dough begins to stick add more flour.
  12. Take any leftover dough, form a ball, and roll out again to 1/4″ thick. Cut the remaining dough with cookie cutters.
  13. Using a spatula place cut-out cookie dough onto the baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minute. Cook until the edges begin to brown. Let cookies rest on cookie sheet until they are firm enough to move to a cooling rack.

Icing

  2. Be sure cookies are cooled completely before decorating with icing.

HOW TO DO YOU KNOW WHEN SUGAR COOKIES ARE DONE BAKING?

Sugar cookies can be a tad bit tricky to know when to take them out of the oven. You’re going to want to keep an eye on them while they’re in the oven. You should start to notice the edges becoming golden-brown, which is a great indicator that they’re getting close.

Depending upon the thickness it should take between 10 – 12 minutes, but watch close, because every oven is different.

HOW TO STORE EASY CUT-OUT SUGAR COOKIES

Store cookies in an airtight container to keep them fresh. I will often separate the baking process from the decorating process and freeze the baked cookies to decorate later. They will be good in your freezer for up to 3 months.

Once you pull the baked cookies from the freezer, you can start decorating immediately.
