Sour Cream and Chive Dip

Sharing is caring!

Rich, creamy, and loaded with flavor, this Sour Cream and Chive Dip comes together in minutes and tastes way better than store-bought versions.

A bowl of creamy white dip garnished with herbs is surrounded by fresh vegetables, including carrot sticks, red bell pepper slices, and green onions, on a white platter. Three square crackers are placed beside the vegetables.

Chive dip is the ultimate classic dip and is perfect to have on hand for a game day celebration, a family get-together, or even a family movie night. With just a handful of simple ingredients, you can create a silky smooth dip ready for dipping veggies, potato chips, wings, and sandwiches – I’ve even been known to dip my pizza in this onion dip!

Why You’ll Love This Chive Dip Recipe

  • Super Easy : It takes minutes to combine the ingredients to prepare the dip. The hardest part, in my opinion, is waiting for the flavors to develop while it sits in the fridge.
  • Make Ahead: This dip tastes better after it sits for a bit, so you can easily make it ahead of time—perfect for stress-free entertaining.
  • A Fresh Alternative to Store-Bought Dips: Skip the preservatives and make a dip that’s fresh, flavorful, and better for you than most store-bought options.
  • Perfect Year-Round: Whether it’s for summer barbecues, holiday gatherings, or a snack during a cozy night in, this dip fits any season!

Ingredients

Ingredients on a marble surface: fresh chives on a rectangular plate, bowls of sour cream, mayonnaise, dried herbs, garlic powder, lemon halves, and small bowls of salt and pepper.

A complete list of ingredients can be found in the recipe card below.

  • Sour Cream: Use full-fat sour cream for the best flavor and texture.
  • Mayonnaise: You can use any kind you have on hand: regular, light, olive oil-based, or even flavored mayonnaise. Vegan mayo would also work.
  • Chives: Fresh chives are the real hero in this dip!
  • Lemon Juice: Fresh is always best, but you can use the refrigerated kind too.
  • Seasonings: I used a combination of parsley, dill, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.

FAQs

Can I use dried chives instead of fresh chives?

Yes, dried chives will work. If using dried, reduce the amount by 1/3.

Can I make a dairy-free version of this sour cream dip?

Yes, if you can find a non-dairy alternative to the sour cream.

Storage and make ahead directions

Make ahead: This homemade dip will keep in the fridge for up to five days in an airtight container.

Freezer: I don’t recommend freezing this dip as it will alter the consistency.

Chive dip variations and substitutions

  • For a lighter version of this chive dip, use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream. Low-fat plain yogurt will also work.
  • For a more herbaceous flavor, add your favorite fresh herbs; dill, cilantro, or basil are all good options.
  • Swap the chives for green onions.

Tips For Success

  • Go full fat on all the ingredients, it’ll taste way better.
  • Don’t skimp on the fridge time, for the best results and the most delicious dip, the flavors need time to develop.
  • Give the dip a good stir when you remove it from the fridge to evenly distribute the flavor.

How to serve this chive dip

The great thing about this dip and its tangy flavor is that it works on almost everything! Here’s a list of what I eat it with:

  • Vegetables – Raw vegetables like carrot sticks, celery, bell peppers, cucumbers, broccoli, and cauliflower.
  • Crackers – Any store-bought cracker tastes great with this dip, or make these spicy ranch crackers.
  • Chips and more – This dip is great with Tortilla chips, crispy potato chips, pita chips, potato wedges, and chicken wings.
