This salad came to life after a memorable experience with hot wings at a local eatery. The dressing was so impressive that I was compelled to create my own version at home—and it truly surpasses any store-bought option.
We love wings at my house and I serve them for all kinds of gatherings including, tail-gate parties, Superbowl parties, or just a fun Sunday afternoon with friends and family watching a big game.
Whenever I whip up my homemade blue cheese dipping sauce, it’s always a crowd-pleaser, with someone often asking for the recipe. It pairs perfectly with my Boneless Chicken Wings, Baked Hot Wings, and Honey Bourbon Wings.
Why you will love this homemade blue cheese dressing
Easy Recipe – This salad dressing is easy to make and only takes a few ingredients!
Low-Carb Dinner – Create the perfect low-carb dinner by serving this dressing on a classic wedge salad with a New York strip.
Tastes like Longhorn Steakhouse Recipe – This dressing reminds you of their Blue Ridge Salad, served right from home!

My favorite way to serve the best blue cheese dressing
- BBQ Chicken Pizza – Drizzle 1 – 2 tablespoons of the homemade blue cheese salad dressing over a slice of pizza.
- Simple Wedge Salad – This dressing was made for a classic wedge salad but is also great on a simple green salad.
- Potato Pancakes – I love to dip potato pancakes in creamy blue cheese dressing.
- Hot Wings – Buffalo wings and blue cheese dressing go perfectly together!
Ingredients including delicious blue cheese
Mayonnaise – I prefer full-fat mayonnaise, but you could substitute light mayo. I have never made the recipe with Miracle Whip.
Buttermilk – Buttermilk adds a tangy flavor to the dressing. See below how to make your own buttermilk or pick some up from the grocery.
Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice – You’ll love how the lemon brightens the dressing.
Black Pepper – Fresh cracked is my favorite.
Blue Cheese Crumbles – There are many different kinds of blue cheese, I used Roquefort for this recipe. You can buy pre-crumbled blue cheese, but I like to buy a wedge of blue cheese and crumble it myself.
Fresh Parsley – You can use dried parsley in a pinch.
How to make easy blue cheese dressing with buttermilk
Step 1: In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, buttermilk, lemon juice, parsley and black pepper.
Step 2: Add the blue cheese crumbles to the dressing.
Step 3: Whisk all ingredients until the smooth and you have a creamy dressing.
Step 4: Pour over a wedge of iceberg lettuce and garnish with blue cheese, green onions, crumbled bacon, and cherry tomatoes. Store in an airtight container.
Recipe variations
Sour Cream – Instead of 1 cup of mayonnaise, use 1/2 cup of mayonnaise and 1/2 cup of sour cream.
Worcestershire Sauce – Add 1 – 2 teaspoons for a bold flavor.
Minced garlic, garlic powder, or onion powder – I recommend grating the garlic if you add fresh garlic. 1-2 teaspoons of the dry spices should be plenty.
Dijon Mustard – Adding a teaspoon of Dijon mustard will add a little bit of tang to the dressing.
Kitchen supplies to make the creamiest blue cheese dressing
How to make buttermilk from milk
You can easily make buttermilk from scratch by adding 1 tablespoon white vinegar (I don’t recommend using white wine vinegar, red wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar) or lemon juice to 1 cup of milk. Gently stir and let sit for 5 minutes. I’ve often made my own buttermilk for this dressing.
How long does blue cheese dressing last
Blue cheese dressing will last in the fridge for 5 days. Although it doesn’t last as long as store-bought dressing, this homemade version is great on salads, as a dipping sauce for wings, and served with raw veggies.
Store leftover homemade dressings in a mason jar, and be sure to date the jar. You can also freeze blue cheese dressing for up to 3 months.
How to make chunky blue cheese dip
If you want to make a dip instead of salad dressing, substitute sour cream for the buttermilk.
FAQ
Because this recipe is made with buttermilk, it would not be considered keto. For a keto blue cheese dressing, try one with sour cream instead of buttermilk.
Yes, this dressing is naturally gluten-free.
Recipe tips
- There’s no need for a food processor. Everything can be easily mixed in a bowl.
- Plain yogurt can be substituted for half of the mayonnaise if you want to lighten up the dressing.
- Be sure to serve this with your next batch of crispy baked chicken wings.
