What is strawberry puree

Strawberry puree is a smooth sauce made by blending fresh strawberries with granulated sugar and lemon juice. Unlike strawberry syrup it is uncooked and uses little sugar.

Its vibrant color and sweet-tart flavor make it a popular choice for adding a burst of strawberry goodness to desserts, beverages, and sauces. It can be incorporated into recipes for cocktails, pies, ice creams, smoothies, and more.

Simple Ingredients

Ingredients to make strawberry jalapeno margaritas.
  • Strawberry Puree – This can be purchased at the grocery store. or you can find directions below on making homemade puree using fresh strawberries.
  • Jalapeno – Cut into jalapeno slices. If you like a spicy cocktail, include the jalapeno seeds. They give the cocktail a nice kick!
  • Fresh Lime Juice – You’ll want lime juice for the margarita and a lime wedge or lime slice to garnish the cocktail.
  • Tequila – Use your favorite tequila brand.
  • Orange-Flavored Liqueur – There are many on the market; I prefer Cointreau. Add a splash of orange juice if you don’t have any orange liqueur.
  • Simple Syrup – You can purchase simple syrup at the grocery store or make your own by combing equal parts sugar and water. See the recipe card for full directions. Agave nectar is a good substitute for simple syrup.
  • Ice Cubes – Fill the glass to the brim with ice.

What is the best tequila for margaritas

There are three tequilas most often used to make margaritas. Blanco, Reposado tequila, and Añejo, each of which have their own distinct flavor profiles and colors.

Blanco is the most commonly used for making a classic margarita. It offers a clean, agave taste that lets the citrus and salt flavors shine.

Reposado is growing in popularity as a unique swap, as it has a richier, woodsier taste, bringing more complexity to the cocktail.

Añejo, meanwhile, is not recommended for making margaritas, as it’s intended more for sipping, which usually means it carries a high price tag and some even more decadent, more complex flavors that are great on its own but not so much in a margarita.

Ultimately, the best tequila for strawberry margaritas will depend on your taste preferences, so feel free to explore different brands and find the one that suits your palate.

Triple Sec vs Cointreau

While both are orange liqueurs commonly used in cocktails, including margaritas, they have a few key differences.

  • Cointreau is a brand of orange liqueur, whereas Triple Sec is a broader category encompassing various brands. Cointreau is known for its distinctive and complex flavor profile.
  • The alcohol content is typically higher in Cointreau.
  • Cointreau carries a higher price tag. Considered a premium orange liqueur. The price is reflective of it’s quality, flavor profile and brand recognition.

It ultimately comes down to personal preference and budget when choosing between Triple Sec and Cointreau for your margaritas and other cocktails.

Margarita salt

For the rim of a margarita glass, there are several salt options.

  • Kosher salt is a popular option for rimming margarita glasses. It has larger course grains that adhere well the rim.
  • Margarita salt can be purchased at the grocery store and is made specifically for rimming margarita glasses. It’s a fine-grained salt which sticks well to the rim of the glass and comes in a resealable container making it easy to use and store for later use.
  • Course sea salt has a large grain, adding a subtle brine flavor to the margarita rim.

Step-by-step directions for making a homemade strawberry margarita

Step 1: Make the strawberry puree. Add 4 cups of strawberries, ¼ cup of sugar, and 1 tablespoon of lemon or lime juice to a food processor or blender. Blend until smooth. Store leftover puree in a mason jar for up to 4 days in the refrigerator.

Step 2: Make the simple syrup. Add equal parts sugar and water to a saucepan. Bring the sugar mixture to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer until the sugar has completely dissolved. It should take about 5 – 7 minutes.

Step 3: Prepare the margarita glasses. Using a lime, wet the rim of the glass. Immediately after wetting the rim, gently place it onto the plate with salt. Tilt and rotate the glass, pressing the rim into the salt to allow it to adhere. Ensure that the salt covers the rim thoroughly and evenly.

Step 4: Make the margarita. To a cocktail shaker, add pureed strawberries, tequila, orange liqueur, four jalapeno rounds, and simple syrup. Shake or stir until well combined.

Step 5: Enjoy! Pour the margarita into the prepared salt rimmed glasses. Garnish with strawberries and extra jalapenos.

Tips for making the best margaritas

  • If it’s strawberry season, choose fresh strawberries for the best flavors. Using fresh strawberries will enhance the margarita’s natural sweetness and vibrant taste.
  • Use quality tequila. Blanco tequila works well for strawberry margaritas, allowing the strawberry flavor to shine without overpowering it with strong oak or aged notes.
  • Fresh lime juice is always best.
  • Add a touch of lime zest to the margarita’s salted rim, adding a little “extra” to this fun cocktail.
  • Fill your glass to the rim with ice before adding this simple recipe.
  • Adjust the measurements of the ingredients to suit your taste preferences.
  • If you do not want to make strawberry puree, you can muddle strawberries in the bottom of the cocktail shaker. You may need to adjust the amount of simple syrup used depending on the sweetness of the strawberries.
  • Add a splash of club soda. The bubbles can provide a light and crisp texture when seeking a lighter option.

I’m more of a traditionalist when it comes to margaritas, so was a bit hesitant about the strawberry margarita. But this blew me away, I loved it!

    1. Yes, I love making a pitcher so I don’t have to mix them individually. Add the ingredients times the number of drinks you would like to make into a pitcher and set it in the fridge to chill. You’ll want to stir or add the mixture to a cocktail shaker before pouring it into a prepared margarita glass.
