Secret Sauce
My son and I were on the road for a baseball tournament when we stumbled upon a local pizzeria that served the most incredible BBQ Chicken Pizza. The sauce was so delicious, I just had to know what made it so special. When I asked the waitress, she casually revealed the secret: a mix of ranch and BBQ sauce. I couldn’t believe it—OH MY GOSH—could it really be that simple?
I promise the sauce sends this BBQ Pulled Pork Pizza right over the top!
Why you’ll love BBQ Pulled Pork Pizza
- Crowd-Pleaser – BBQ Pulled Pork Pizza is a hit with everyone, from kids to adults. It’s a unique twist on traditional pizza that’s sure to impress at gatherings, game days, or family dinners.
- Leftovers – If you have leftover pulled pork, this pizza is an excellent way to reinvent it into a new, delicious meal. It’s a creative way to reduce food waste while enjoying something different.
- Easily Customizable – You can easily customize the toppings to suit your preferences.
- Quick and Convenient – This recipe uses store-bought flatbread and barbeque sauce, making it quick and easy to assemble. It’s perfect for busy weeknights when you want something satisfying without a lot of fuss.
Ingredients
- Flatbread or Naan – Opt for store-bought flatbreads or naan for a quick and easy base. They provide a perfect, crispy foundation that holds up well to the toppings and cooks quickly. You can also use homemade pizza crust if you prefer.
- Pulled Pork – Tender, slow-cooked pulled pork is the star of the show. You can use leftover pulled pork or make a fresh batch. It’s best if the pork is coated in a smoky, slightly sweet BBQ sauce, as this will be the primary flavor of the pizza.
- BBQ Sauce – A tangy and sweet BBQ sauce ties all the flavors together. Choose your favorite store-bought sauce, or make your own. Feel free to adjust the sauce based on your flavor preference—whether you like it smoky, spicy, or extra sweet.
- Red Bell Pepper – Diced red bell peppers add a burst of color and a subtle sweetness that pairs beautifully with the savory pulled pork and BBQ sauce. When diced small, they cook quickly and evenly, providing a slight crunch that enhances the texture of the pizza.
- Red Onion – Thinly sliced red onions add a nice crunch and a pop of color, as well as a mild sweetness that complements the BBQ sauce. If you prefer a softer texture, you can caramelize the onions before adding them to the pizza.
- Pepper Jack Cheese – Pepper Jack cheese is perfect for those who love a bit of spice. It melts beautifully, creating a creamy, gooey layer that binds all the toppings together.
- Mozzarella Cheese – Mozzarella is the ultimate melting cheese, known for its creamy texture and mild flavor.
- Cilantro – Cilantro also adds a pop of green color, making the pizza visually appealing. If you’re not a fan of cilantro, you can leave it out or substitute it with fresh parsley for a similar effect.
- Red Pepper Flakes – For those who like a bit of heat, a pinch of red pepper flakes adds a spicy kick to the pizza. I’m a huge fan!
- Parmesan Cheese – Totally optional!
Kitchen tools for making pork flatbread pizzas
How to make BBQ Pork Pizza
Step 1: Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
Step 2: Place the flatbreads on the prepared baking sheet. Brush each flatbread with a thin layer of the remaining 3/4 cup BBQ sauce, spreading it evenly to the edges.
Step 4: Evenly distribute the pulled pork over the BBQ-sauced flatbreads. Ensure the pork is spread out in a single layer for even cooking.
Step 5: Sprinkle the diced red bell pepper and sliced red onion over the pulled pork, making sure the toppings are evenly distributed across each flatbread.
Step 6: Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese and shredded pepper jack cheese evenly over the vegetables and pulled pork. For a spicier kick, sprinkle a pinch of red pepper flakes over the cheese.
Step 7: Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese and shredded pepper jack cheese evenly over the vegetables and pulled pork.
Step 8: If desired, sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese and freshly chopped cilantro over the pizzas right after they come out of the oven. Drizzle with special sauce and serve immediately.
Storage
Cool leftover pizza completely before storing in an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
Reheating pizza
Oven: Reheat the pizza in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 8-10 minutes, or until the crust is crispy and the cheese is melted. For best results, place the pizza directly on the oven rack or a baking sheet.
Skillet: For a quick reheat, place a slice in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Cover with a lid and cook for a few minutes until the cheese melts and the crust is crispy.
Microwave: If you’re in a hurry, you can microwave the pizza, but it may result in a softer crust. To keep the crust from getting too soggy, place a cup of water in the microwave with the pizza slice and heat for 30-60 seconds.
Air Fryer: Place leftover pizza in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Heat the pizza for 3-5 minutes. Check the pizza after 3 minutes to see if it’s heated to your liking. The exact time may vary with different air fryers.
Recipe Variations
Hawaiian BBQ Pulled Pork Pizza – Add pineapple chunks and crumbled bacon.
Southwestern BBQ PUlled Pork Pizza – Add black beans, corn, and sliced jalapenos.
What to serve with BBQ Chicken Flatbread
- Wedge Salad – Instead of a traditional dressing, use the pizza special sauce for a smokey twist.
- Creamy Coleslaw – Because coleslaw and BBQ just go together!
- Grilled Corn on the Cob – Sweet, charred corn pairs perfectly with BBQ flavors, and you can serve it with a lime-chili butter for extra zest.
- Lemonade – Serve this homemade refreshing drink.
Recipe Tips
Don’t forget the secret sauce – Drizzle the BBQ-ranch secret sauce over the pizza just before serving. This adds a tangy, creamy finish that complements the smoky and sweet flavors of the pizza.
Don’t overload the flatbread – While it’s tempting to pile on the toppings, keep in mind that flatbread is thinner than traditional pizza crust. Overloading it can make the pizza heavy and soggy. A moderate amount of toppings ensures a crisp, manageable slice.
